New Non-Executive Director appointed

South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust has appointed a new Non-Executive Director to the Trust Board.

Professor Ian Everall, who trained in psychiatry at the Bethlem Royal and Maudsley Hospitals, is set to attend his first board meeting on October 31.

In addition to contributing to the board, Professor Everall will bring his own expertise – having been at the forefront of research into cellular, molecular and genetic changes in the brain in major psychiatric disorders for more than 20 years.

Professor Everall said: “I am delighted to be joining the Trust Board as a Non-Executive Director.

“I very much look forward to working closely with the Trust’s exceptional staff and our external partners to help deliver our core strategies and improve the experiences of all those who use the service.”

In September 2017, Professor Everall was appointed Executive Dean of the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience (IoPPN).

Previously Cato Chair of Psychiatry and Head of the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Melbourne, Professor Everall obtained his MBChB at Leicester University School of Medicine.

In 1989 he obtained Membership of the Royal College of Psychiatrists and a MRC Clinical Research Training Fellowship, followed in 1992 by an advanced MRC Clinician Scientist Fellowship in the Department of Neuropathology, Institute of Psychiatry.

Professor Everall gained his PhD in 1992 and in 1993 was appointed Senior Lecturer at the Institute of Psychiatry and Honorary Consultant Psychiatrist at The Maudsley Hospital. He was appointed Professor of Experimental Neuropathology at the Institute of Psychiatry in 1999 and in 2004 became Professor of Psychiatry at the University of California, San Diego.

Professor Everall is replacing Interim Non-Executive Director Professor Matthew Hotopf.
