Douglas Bennett House Development

The Trust are in the process of developing new services on the Maudsley Hospital site in Southwark, replacing the old Douglas Bennett House. The construction is underway on eight modern new, adult inpatient wards: four Acute, one PICU from Lambeth Hospital. The new, purpose-built building gives us the opportunity to include brand new, specially designed wards for EDU and the Lishman Unit (adult eating disorders and neuropsychiatry), moving them from their current home at the Bethlem Royal Hospital, using all of the latest principles of healthcare design, providing a modern, safe and therapeutic environment for service users.

These have been co-designed by patients, carers, clinicians and specialist architects working together to create a modern fit for purpose wards, and a much-improved environment for patients and staff.

Benefits of the proposed move include:
  • Purpose-built, specially configured wards, designed for service users’ needs
  • Individual, en suite bathrooms for all bedrooms and more assisted bathrooms available
  • Direct, unsupervised access to large balconies, a roof garden or courtyards landscaped with trees, seating and raised beds for therapeutic gardening
  • Direct views across the wards for staff to observe service users for their safety
  • Specifically allocated private office and lounge spaces for staff
  • A more therapeutic environment with access to a range of therapy and treatment rooms, quiet rooms, family rooms and multifaith spaces.
When the new building opens in Spring 2023, the wards will be located next to the existing outpatient service and day care unit on the Maudsley Hospital site and close to the acute physical healthcare services at King’s College Hospital allowing for better access to services for patients, and collaborative, multidisciplinary working for staff.

Renaming Douglas Bennett House

This survey has now closed, thank you to everyone who took part. The members of the Programme Board will chose a name during Winter 2022.

The Trust wanted to know what you think the new building and its wards should be called, and which names will have the most meaning to our staff and the communities we serve.

The new building will replace a building that once stood on the site - Douglas Bennett House- named after Dr. Douglas Bennett (1918-1997), a consultant psychiatrist at Maudsley Hospital, from 1962 until he retired, who pioneered long term care and rehabilitation services.
